Preparing your home for winter | Twin Cities

Preparing your home for winter in the Twin Cities areas due to the cold temperatures and snow is important to prepare your home for the months ahead. Below we’ll go over some maintenance items to tackle so your home is prepared for the winter ahead!

  1. Sealing Door and Windows – make sure to check for any drafter around windows and doors. Caulking is the most cost-effective solution to get your home prepared for the winter months and will do the trick to keep the heat in and the cold air out!
  2. Inspecting your roof – Checking for any missing or damaged shingles and replacing what’s needed will help protect your home from any external leaks that could come in from snow melting come springtime or a hot wave in the middle of winter.
  3. Blowout your sprinkler system (if applicable) – not doing this can cause damage to your sprinkler system when you need them next season. Pipes tend to freeze over winter and then dethaw in the spring. It’s important to make sure all water is out of your sprinkler system before the pipes start to freeze.
  4. Landscaping & Yard Cleanup – Make sure your grass is picked up with any debris. In Minnesota leaves fall and cover the grass in most of our yards. Pick up any sticks, rake leaves, and make sure your yard is clean so your grass can breathe! Leaving debris on your grass all fall and winter is devastating to your grass’ life.
  5. Have a plan for snow removal – whether you use Tomms or a different company or you want to take it on yourself, have a plan! When a snowstorm hits the last thing you want is for your cars or front door to be snowed in. Once winter hits and snow starts falling it’s important to already have a plan in place so you don’t find yourself in a bad snowy situation!!

At Tomms, we understand the pain and danger some of the maintenance tasks above can be done by yourself in the Twin Cities. If you don’t feel like tackling one of them or all of them give us a call or text and we’ll be happy to assist in preparing your home for winter.
